In this post: What to expect from this blog, how to use this blog, and why I created it.
What is "Ramiah Reads When?"
"Ramiah Reads When" is a book blog by me, Montana Ramiah Houston. For a long while, I've been one of those people who has been meaning to read books for fun but could never find the time between everything else I was doing. For most of high school and college, I only had time to read books I was assigned. I was seriously missing out on some good books by avoiding them - I just didn't know it yet!
In January 2020, I decided 'enough is enough'. I finally opened one of the dozens of books I ordered from Amazon last summer and felt so refreshed to read something on my terms - something that both interested and educated me. I've always been an avid note-taker, and wanting to re-read the lessons I learn from books again, but I did not yet have enough drive to do both. That's why I began this blog.
If you can't yet find the time to read books you've been meaning to, or want to reread (and remember) lessons when you need them, read "Ramiah Reads When". The mission of this blog, to provide you perfectly timed reads (or re-reads), is one of the main things that distinguishes it from others. This blog is perfect for my fellow recent college grads preparing for the new stage of our lives - a.k.a adulting - and even current college students wanting a head start to success. However, books chosen are focused on helping readers learn skills that will help us grow personally and professionally, so anyone interested in furthering their development is welcome and encouraged to read.
My reading mantra is the more practical and actionable, the better.
What Can I Expect from "Ramiah Reads When?"
I'm so glad you asked.
Ramiah Recommended? -- Book reviews from me so you can discover if books are worth your time
Ramiah Reflects -- Book notes of striking passages, life quotes, and food-for-thought questions that made it worth it (even if the entire book isn't)
Ramiah's Re-read When -- Milestones, feelings, or other experiences you have that are perfect for taking another stab at this book
I plan to post at least two times a month, sending out newsletters around twice a month as well.
How do I effectively use "Ramiah Reads When?"
There are categories each post belongs to so you can filter books by an interest you have.
The categories are:
Adulting: Learning how to transition from full-time student to full-time adult.
Black in America: In a time of intense racial injustice, learn more about how we got here and what we can do to move toward justice together.
Communication: Communicating - we do it all the time, but how can we do it better? Be it through reading, writing, or speaking, there is power in the words we choose and how we arrange them.
Finding Yourself + Post College: Finding who we are and who we're meant to be is a big question, especially for college students. Here are resources for how to get there.
Job Prep: These are tips and tricks for getting that first job, being successful at that job, and finding the next (and every successful step in between).
Learn Something New: If you've ever wanted to read about something you were never formally taught about, learn a new skill, or just read something genuinely interesting in and of itself, this is the section for you.
Money: How to get it, spend it properly, invest it, and prepare yourself and your family for generational wealth.
Other: For interesting books that do not fit my above/below categories.
Out of Comfort Zone: Books that either encourage going out of your comfort zone, or books about areas/topics that are out of mine.
Success: Books about how to find your definition of success, how 'successful' people got to where they are, and about becoming your better self.
Thinking: Books that look at psychology and reframe how you think about thinking (especially negative thoughts).
Also, please feel free to engage! Do you agree with my review? Did you find things I didn't mention interesting in the book as you read? When would you re-read it?
I hope we can grow this blog together.
Check out my other posts here.
Until next time!
